Genetics of Glaucoma

Dr. Cathryn Mellersh (Kennel Club Genetics Centre, Animal Health Trust [AHT])  and James Oliver [Ophthalmologist, BVA Eye Panellist, Animal Health Trust] are undertaking to investigate the genetics of glaucoma (a painful eye condition that can lead to blindness) in the Flatcoated Retriever.    Please click here to read their proposal "Genome-Wide Association Analyses for Primary Glaucoma and Pectinate Ligament Dysplasia in the Flat Coated Retriever in the United Kingdom.   

 How You Can Help

  • By having a DNA (via cheek swab) sample taken, if asked for, when presenting your Flatcoat for an eye examinaton.
  • Please send to the AHT a DNA sample if your Flatcoat should unfortunately develop glaucoma and you have not as yet banked DNA with them.
  • If you have DNA already banked and your Flatcoat subsequently develops glaucoma please update the AHT (click on the following title for the update form: The Update form to submit to the AHT (Form 2H)
